About Us

      We're glad you stopped by!

We are a theologically reformed congregation gathered around the Word of God for his glory and our sanctification. Worship is at the center of all that we do here at SWHCC.

We worship God through a blended style of worship that includes praise choruses as well as the great hymns of the faith.

Our congregation has been brought together from many different denominational backgrounds thus we enjoy a diversity in tradition that is held together by our unity in Christ.

The Southwest Harbor Congregational Church. Built in 1885 on the High Road,
Is still in use today. Additions to the rear of the structure in the Twentieth Century
included a parish house, Offices, And Sunday school rooms.
The church was the first one organized on Mount Desert Island, With the Congregation gathering in October 1792.
On that day Fifteen men and women signed a covenant that year which still serves as a statement of what we believe:

We confess our faith in God, Our Heavenly Father, and our reverent love for Jesus Christ, our Savior and our willingness to be guided by the Holy Spirit. We promise, as members of this church, to walk together as Christian brethren,

obedient to the teachings of the Holy Scriptures, until we are regularly dismissed there from. And this we do for the Glory of God, for the good of our fellow men, and for our mutual growth, in Christian grace seeking to do all-in faith, fellowship and service, in the Spirit of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

(From the original 1792 bylaws)

We were received into membership into the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference in 1997, and as such we uphold and are in full agreement with their Statement of Faith found in the CCCC Constitution Article III.

For more on our distinctives, please see our Bylaws

We Worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ every Lord's Day at 10:30 a.m.  We seek to glorify and honor our Lord through music (both contemporary and traditional), the preaching of the Word, Prayer, and the celebration of the sacraments of Baptism and Communion.
